” ‘Iole HeiHei “
Pono gets laid off from his job, a month after graduating from college. Donna, a commander in the marines on a covert mission in Syria, gets shipped home for psychiatric evaluation after her boyfriend Dan is killed riding in the convoy in front of hers. Freddie, back from USC for the summer, gets kicked out of the house when his parents find out he is starring in porn flicks. It hasn’t been a great week for our characters, who were all childhood friends, growing up together surfing in Oahu.
When his parents were killed on 9/11, Pono was adopted as a baby, and was raised in a Jewish family, along with his brother Josh. Their grandfather, Charlie, runs a popular surf shop and surf school, Surfer’s Paradise, on Waikiki Beach and taught them to love surfing and the ocean.
Pono won’t go back in the surf after nearly being killed in a surfing competition. But he still carries a torch for Donna, who returns to Honolulu to find out she is being forced to undergo psychiatric counseling in order to return to duty.
Charlie owns a beat-up old beach house and offers it to Pono and Donna to live in, with the condition that they fix it up.
Donna finds out she is pregnant with her dead commander/boyfriend’s baby.
And Pono collapses from his head injury, hits the ground hard, and falls into a coma.
